About University

Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences was originally established in 1955 as a College of Medicine within the Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz.

In 1986 five of the university’s schools: medicine, dental, nursing, pharmacy and health merged to form Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences. The university is operated by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

The university is located in Khuzestan, a province in southeastern Iran.

The university has three campuses spread across Khuzestan Province, in the cities of Ahwaz, Behbahan and Abadan. Within the city of Ahvaz the university is affiliated with eight public hospitals as well as another 20 in the city’s suburbs and surrounding areas. The university has also set up a number of clinics located across Khuzestan.

The university is organised into seven academic schools: dentistry, health, medicine, paramedicine, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and nursing and midwifery. Each school offers a range of both undergraduate and graduate courses and degree programmes.

There are four research centres at the university: the Cellular and Molecular Research Centre, Environmental Technologies Research Centre, Infectious and Tropical Disease Research Centre and the Research Centre of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathy.

The university publishes its research findings in six medical journals that specialise in microbiology, natural pharmaceutical products, health research, chronic disease care, health sciences, and oncology.

About City:

Ahvaz is located in Khuzestan plain with the height of 18 meters above the sea level and enjoys a hot and humid climate. This city surrounded by fertile and flat plain from the north and center, sand dunes from east and west and arid plain of Maron from southern and southeastern which contains a huge source of gas and oil and this city is placed in the hottest areas of Iran due to the acute shortage of vegetation.

Ahvaz is a large, vast, most advanced and populous city in Khuzestan and one of the most important economic and industrial centers in Iran .The big industrial factories, National Iranian South oil fields company and National Iranian Drilling Company turn this city into one of the most significant industrial centers in Iran and it is the cause of attracting the immigrants.

Ahvaz is the political, administrative and trade center of Khuzestan province that consists of 3 parts “Markazi”, “Bavi”, “Hamidieh”, 5 cities and 12 rural districts. Ahvaz metropolis is the third largest city after Tehran and Mashhad and seventh most populous city in Iran. Karun with the highest water level, known as the biggest and longest river of Iran and Middle East divides Ahvaz into east and west parts, and the bridges on this river are the symbols of this town and the most important tourist attractions beside the remains of the imposing war, religious places and historical buildings of Ahvaz.

Climate

In Ahvaz, the summers are long, sweltering, arid, and clear and the winters are cool, dry, and mostly clear. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 46°F to 115°F and is rarely below 39°F or above 119°F.
