The China Three Gorges University was establish in June 29, 2000 and approved by the Ministry of Education. The university holds of 30 colleges and more then 70 undergraduate programs which contains nine different fields comprising medicine, science, engineering, arts, fine art, economics, management, law and education. The university has a large number of enrolled students which include approximately 23,730 full-time undergraduate students, more then 4,141 postgraduate students and 1290 international students.

The university campus is extent across an area of more than 200 hectares. The CTGU offers many recreational and administrative facilities to students which include a library more than 2,000,000 volumes, three experimental teaching demonstration centres, two engineering practice education centres, one scientific observation research station, five ministerial and provincial level key laboratories, twenty teaching experiment centres, one key laboratory, one engineering technology research centre and one environment centre administered by MOE.

Under the Qing Guangxu Emperor, Yichang was opened to foreign commerce as a trading port, signed by Sir Thomas Wade and Li Hongzhang in Chefoo on 21 August 1876.
Yichang has a four-season, monsoon-influenced, humid subtropical climate with cool, damp and generally overcast winters and hot humid summers. In January the monthly 24-hour average temperature is 5.0 °C and 27.7 °C in July, while the annual mean is 17.08 °C.
